Pre-Colonial Artifacts

Native Americans in Rocky Hill

Native Americans lived in what we know now as Rocky Hill for many thousands of years. The Connecticut River Valley was one of the most heavily populated areas in New England in pre-colonial times. Rocky Hill is known to have been the site of at least one very large village in late pre-contact times.  The large size of the Native American community and the longevity of their stay have resulted in a great number of artifacts being found in our town.

The Rocky Hill Historic Society Collection

Thousands of pre-colonial artifacts are housed at the Rocky Hill Historical Society.  Most of the collection consists of lithic (i.e., stone) artifacts including points and bowls, as well as other material including pottery.

Future Plans

We are in the process of cataloging and researching our collection so that we can learn more about the details of our past .  Our long-range plan is to catalog and photograph the entire collection and make it available electronically on our website.  This will make the history of Rocky Hill more available to you from the comfort of your home.  If you are interested in this project and would like to help volunteer
