Ferry

Experience history on the nation’s oldest operational ferry

The Rocky Hill - Glastonbury Ferry is the oldest continuously operational ferry in the United States. The original ferry dates back to 1655, crossing the Connecticut River between Rocky Hill and Glastonbury. The ferry serves local motorists, cyclists, and tourists, and provides great value as a historic resource.

    Monuments and Markers

The link below leads to a compilation of historical markers around Rocky Hill which can be found everywhere from buildings, parks, cemeteries and along roadsides.

Back in 2009, Anita Watson, former director of the Rocky Hill Historical Society's Academy Hall Museum, requested photos of monuments around town for a museum display.  John Serra took on the project.  A ride around Rocky Hill quickly revealed a large number of plaques of important people who have contributed to our town history.  The museum display idea evolved into a much bigger project.

The following list now has over 150 items.  The work, originally displayed in three ring binders in the museum,  was digitized and organized in 2020 into a single document by Tim Honan.  Descriptions were revised, and many of the pictures retaken.

What follows is a compilation of all the markers, locations, pictures and descriptions.

We are sure we don't have all the memorials, because new ones are being added.  If you know of a marker that we missed, let us know here.

    Happy searching!
